Could someone translate the following ?
"Swiss rugby's blue ribbon event". It is about the two cup final but I don't understand the meaning.

Since no english is trying to help here, I'll try to answer your question.

I think that "blue ribbon" is an expression used to qualify an event which is the highlight or the climax of a competition. In other word the day that is marked in the calendar since the beginning of the season because of it's prestige.

I understood the reason for choosing the "blue ribbon" expression is derived from french (as always in english when it's about prestige ), since "cordon bleu" is how you'll call the very top of french cookers

In actual fact my Gallic friends, the true origin of “blue ribbon event” originates from medieval times when blue ribbons were given by land rulers as a reward and symbol of honour. The colour blue was used as the dye was both expensive and hard to find. There is/was also a form of award that was given by the Monarchy to honour brave soldiers called “The Order of the Garter” which was also a blue ribbon.

Even you Frenchies had a similar story although I don’t know whose predates whose here, apparently “The Society of the Holy Ghost” (don’t know who they are) used to bestow the gift of a blue scarf on their most brave knights.

As a result of all this, the expression “blue ribbon event” has evolved in order to symbolise an event that is worthy of honour and generally held in the highest esteem.
